What You Need to Know Before Your Next Garage Sale!

If you followed the Spring Cleaning Checklist from TCO, than more likely than not, you have purged and decided to get rid of some things!  Now that we are going into Summer, many of you may decide you have enough “stuff” to hold a garage sale!

On the podcast this week, we talked about garage sales!  We talked about why you may want to do one and the work involved in preparing, especially a successful one!  You want your hard work to pay off! Literally!

Typically I would not write a blog post about what we just talked about on the podcast, but I felt in this circumstance it may be a good check off list to go by and you would find it helpful when getting ready….

Enjoy and please share with us your excellent tips and ideas on how to pull off the best garage sale… We would love to hear from you!

Tips on making your Garage Sale a success!

  • To get more traffic to your garage sale, do a neighborhood sale or at least a 2 family sale, share in the advertising costs.
  • Sort items into Categories- set up your driveway or garage almost like a department store.  Categories could include; Baby Items, Toys, Children Clothes, Electronics, Household Items, Clothing, Furniture.
  • Have clear signs on what the departments are.  This way your customers know what is available.
  • Hang up adult clothes, outerwear etc.  They will sell better if they are hung up and washed.
  • Make sure everything is clean and in the best shape as possible.
  • Make sure everything is priced – do not make your customers guess.  If are not sure what to price an item, check on e-bay or craigslist to get an idea of what similar items are going for.  You could also visit a couple of garage sales the weekend prior to yours to get a better idea.
  • Borrow as many tables and hanging racks as you can, the better displayed, the more you sell!
  • Have plenty of change available.  Keep it safe and not in a money box.  You could wear an apron or a tool belt, keeping the money on you.  As you are collecting money, put it safely inside.

Fun for the kids:

  • Have your children set up a lemonade or popsicle stand.  They get a chance to earn a little extra money and have a lot of fun at the same time.  People love it and you’ll be surprised how much extra money they can make!
  • If your children are having a hard letting a toy go, let them know they get to keep the proceeds.  Sometimes just that incentive alone can make a difference.
  • After it all said and done, the last thing you will want to do is cook dinner!  So treat yourself and your family out to dinner and celebrate your success!  Order dessert if you feel like it, you earned it!

Happy Organizing!

I would also add that when you advertise, be sure to list what kinds of stuff you will have available (i.e. kids clothes, womens clothes sizes 6-10, kids toys and books, kitchen stuff, small furniture, etc.)

I’m a new teacher, so I frequent yard sales to build up my classroom library. I often use Craigslist to plan my routes from yard sale to yard sale, but I skip any sale that doesn’t list what kinds of items are available, or doesn’t use enough detail (i.e. they just say “kid stuff” and not kids books and toys). I’m sure some of those sales would have had what I wanted, however, I don’t have time to waste on taking the risk.

Thank you for the additional tips… You are right, there are people looking for specific things, and the more detail the better!
